April global orders for new vessels decreased year on year

According to the monthly market report recently released by VesselValue, in April this year, a total of 21 new orders for new vessels worldwide were delivered, a decrease of 27.6% over the same period of last year.

According to VesselValue, 21 new orders for April included 5 bulk carriers and 16 oil tankers. Bulk carrier orders for new vessels decreased by 61.5% from 13 vessels in the same period last year, however, orders for new vessels increased 23% over the same period last year. In addition, none of the container ships, LPG carriers and OSV vessels had any new vessel orders last month.

VesselValue said South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries recently received orders for eight new VLCC ships, four of which have been confirmed by BW Group and the other four are reportedly booked by Capital Maritime & Trading.

In the meantime, April shipments worldwide saw a 44% drop in shipbreaking volumes compared to the same period last year. Among them, the largest decline was bulk carriers, shipbreaking in April compared to the same period last year decreased by 72%; oil tankers, container ships and liquefied gas carriers were higher than the same period last year, while OSV shipbreaking unchanged from the same period last year .
